There are many martial arts styles.  What separates Soo Bahk Do from all others is the variety of techniques and the philosophy behind the techniques and the art. Soo Bahk Do is a Korean martial art but has incorporated many techniques from Chinese and Okinawan martial arts styles. This produces the most well-rounded practitioner, not limiting him or her to the techniques of just one style.  It is a combination of hard and soft styles balancing fast, quick movement with soft, flowing techniques.

Many styles teach effective fighting and self-defense but Soo Bahk Do is much more than just punching and kicking. Learning fighting techniques without a strong philosophy is to burden society with more dangerous people. Soo Bahk Do develops the whole person; physically, mentally and spiritually.  The Soo Bahk Do philosophy guides us in our path through life; to have the courage to act yet remain humble in our accomplishments, to be honest with ourselves and in our relationships with others, to endure the difficult times in life and to serve others in their times of need, to lead a balanced fruitful life.  Soo Bahk Do teaches "Virtue in Action" - we must demonstrate the Moo Duk Kwan philosophy in our lives, not just talk about them.

What makes Soo Bahk Do a Unique Martial Art?

On November 9, 1945 Grandmaster Hwang Kee officially created the Moo Duk Kwan.   Literally translated , "Moo Duk Kwan" means "Institute of Martial Virtue." It is the combination of proven methods of self defense with a strict philosophy of how to conduct your life and relate to others both inside and outside the training hall.  A better understanding of the Moo Duk Kwan comes from the expanded definition of "A brotherhood and school of stopping inner and outer conflict and developing virtue through Soo Bahk Do training".

Soo Bahk Do, translated means "Hand Striking Way", or the more esoteric translation as a "path to cultivate (improve the quality of the individual and humanity".  Soo Bahk Do is the means by which we develop the person physically and mentally through rigorous physical training tempered with the philosophy of the Moo Duk Kwan.
